1. Situation Overview
•Hurricane Category 5 made landfall in Tardindi two days ago, severely affecting 70% of the population (~100,000 people) across 2 inhabited islands. Impacting approximately 40 communities (urban and rural)
•Population displacement:
•~7,000 people in emergency shelters.
•~rest of affected pop remained in damaged homes/communities.
•Electricity: Full outage across affected areas for 48 hours; ongoing.
•Road access & communications: Limited due to fallen trees and disrupted networks; some islands cut off.
2. Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Situation
•Water Supply:
•Main island has piped system; 3 of 10 pumping stations damaged. (Tardindi water utility is a registered member of CWUIC)
•Erratic water supply in urban areas; some pipelines eroded by floods.
•One smaller island lack centralized systems; high dependence on household rainwater tanks—most tanks damaged.
•Sanitation: 70% of houses damaged, including non-functional toilets and bathrooms.
•1 of 3 wastewater treatment plants not operating.
•Health risks:
•Floodwaters may have contaminated underground tanks.
•Hospitals running on generators; smaller facilities lack power and water.
•Markets & Access to Hygiene Items:
•Only 50% of hygiene/construction material shops open.
•Price inflation of approx. 20% on available items.
